A YEAR THAT WAS!

A YEAR THAT WAS !!!

Hi dear friends,

I truly feel lost on this last day of the year 2020! When I turn back and introspect, I wonder if I really did go through 2020? I am sure all of you will identify with me, when I say, this year never came! But all said and done, we are on the threshold of 2021, bidding a farewell to 2020! We have lost many things and gained a lot too! I pen here my feelings, with a heavy heart, hoping to witness a new dawn, with new hopes!

One such year was truly here!!!!

One such year was truly here,

Difficult to believe but it’s true,

When we all were aghast,

Till March 2020, nothing we knew!

Marching came a tiny being,

It took us all for a ride,

Neither could we do anything,

Nothing was in our hands, to decide!

Little did we know, what was going to happen?

How we take everything for granted,

Our whole life was to change,

Nothing was as we desired or as we wanted!

There was no aroma of pickles,
Neither a cup of ice cream and cake,
No shops of sugarcane juice,
Neither a glass of mango shake!

No one gave wedding invitations,
Neither were we called for the preceding eve,
No chance of paying heartfelt homage visits,
Neither could we attend death rituals and express grief!

There wasn’t an expectation of branded apparels,
Neither was wanted expensive makeup,
Neither did we buy costly shoes,
Nor got gold jewellery made up!

No one bought railway tickets,
Neither bus reservations were hooked,
Empty were all hotel rooms and
Neither were any flights booked!

No chance of visiting maternal abodes,
Neither the taste of mother’s cooking,
No visits to friends’ places,

No get-togethers or outings!

There were no temple bells,
Neither the squabbles for worship queues,
Nor did we donate at piers,
Neither were we fed holy laddoos!

Though many good things the year brought,

It made us think and collect our thoughts,

It made us look inside and introspect,

It made us look at everyday things with respect!

It showed us how to live at home,

To live with minimum and demand less,

It taught us self-dependence and self-help,

To do more and expect crisis to face!

It showed us how important health is,

How fitness counts and immunity develops,

How to indulge in proper, healthy eating

And what to eat and how it envelops!

The year brought us closer,

As family members and friends,

It showed us how significant it is,

To have a shoulder that befriends!

Things we never had time for,

Would take up any time, we assumed!

Books became important,

So also hobbies were resumed!

 The students were at home,

But teachers met them online,

Teaching continued,

With full vigour and in time!

Conferences and Seminars halted,

But zoomed in Meet and Zoom,

Proving once again,

How man overcomes doom!

Many business endeavours halted,

But many flourished,

God was visible,

In doctors, nurses, health workers and police!

It was a year that,

Brought forth the fact,

That never is all lost and

Keeping together keeps all intact!

It was year that brought anxiety,

Depression, uneasiness and poverty,

It stressed the importance of meditation,

Belief and faith in our beloved deity!

The year once again stressed before us,

That environment is God!

The more you tamper with it,

The more you will face the odd!

This 2020 will always be remembered,
As a year never awaited,
One such year was truly here,
Neither anyone dreamt, nor baited!

 BE HAPPY

 Hi all!

It’s been quite some time since I last conversed with you! Yes, its been a year, very different from the others that we have ever experienced! A year that truly held us at a tenterhook, a year that was totally unpredictable and a year that doesn't know what is coming up next? We all are in a fix, we don't know what's coming up next and how do we take it all?

What best can we do in such a situation?

I believe what we can do is "BE HAPPY!"

It’s a great wealth to be able to be happy! It is a function of Positive Thinking, some Special Skills, a Great Mindset and Active Actions! I know it’s difficult in adverse situations but then, what's the harm in trying?

I have tried out some things, which I am putting down before you, see if it helps?

First thing we can do is not to think about the past or the future and Live in the Moment!

Stressing about the past doesn't make one happy and worrying about the future wouldn't make one happy! Let’s try to focus our energy on the present. The present moment is the only one we have and we can do something about it! We can learn from our past errors but without lingering on it and we can plan for the future without getting too involved in it!

Every moment is a gift from God, so let's cherish it and focus on the good that's happening in this moment! Let us thank God for that He has given us which many do not have!

Happiness is inborn, innate, inside us, it can’t be concocted! Its in our own hands to be happy! Create your own happiness by being grateful and living in "NOW!"

Bless me and my people, my God,

Give me strength to face all odd,

I would remain grateful to you,

For keeping me satisfied and happy,

In the sense true!

मन करा रे प्रसन्न!

POSITIVE MINDSET

During these hard times, which we faced from around March 2020 onwards, it has been an observation that those who had a positive attitude, a positive mind-set could sail through! The power of mind is tremendous! Sometimes we feel so dejected that we are on the verge of a nervous breakdown! Everything seems futile, we feel everyone and even nature is against us and it is OK if we do not exist! This stage comes in the life of every individual, sooner or later! But one, who overcomes this, with the power of mind, is a true positive person!

It has been observed that persons with age over 90 years have emerged strongly after being affected by Corona and one of age 40 has lost to it! This, of course, may have many underlying reasons, physiological and medical conditions but definitely one of them is the will to fight and overcome!

Someone has troubled you, mentally and physically, the wound remains! The person is gone, he or she may not even remember the incidence, but you, as a victim, will remember the physical and mental insult, disturbing your mind-set! This may lead to conditions like diabetes, hypertension, which are definitely known to be caused due to stress! Even trivial looking infections like common cold, cough, fever to cancers are known to occur because of harbouring of negative emotions! Do you think it is necessary?

Louise Hay's book "You can heal your life" is a beautiful example!  Clean your mind and make the slate receptive! Excuse all the people who you feel are against you! They don't matter! Your body is your best partner, who is going to be with you till death, so care for it! Your body heals itself, whether you take remedial medicines or not! It has a fantastic healing mechanism! Fill it with positive thoughts and all will seem and be GREEN and healthy!

Saint Tukaram very aptly described this so long back, we need to contemplate on it and truly imbibe it in our lifes!

मन करा रे प्रसन्‍न

सर्व सिद्धीचें कारण ।

मोक्ष अथवा बंधन ।

सुख समाधान इच्छा ते ॥

This festival, let’s not fire crackers, but lets go on the expedition of mind cleaning and

harbouring positive thoughts!

Hoping for a GREEN attitude and GREEN life!

POPULATION

We are a young country, with average youth population very high! Bright minds, huge man power, beautiful country, ample natural resources but..........! I have penned my thoughts, in a poetic form, see if you agree!

India is a beautiful country,

With rich flora and fauna in bounty!

It has a rich cultural heritage,

Handed down through ancient age!

With all its colors and fragrances,

With its educational background and sciences,

Why is it taking a back foot, as yet?

It’s development not at an imagined gait?

One word instantly springs into mind,

Isn’t it the vast population, that’s being unkind?

Population can be a virtue, not a vice,

Its strength can be turned to our benefit and choice.

Population of youth, at its highest peak,

That’s India, our motherland, green and sleek!

What really needs to be done, at bay?

Population should remain united, come what may!

People have always tried to divide and rule,

We are really the ones who hand them the tool.

It’s up to us, what we want our mother to be,

Whether we want her bound, submissive or free?

Population with expertise of all kinds and level,

Can become a boon for our progress real!

Population with a mindset to bring forth innovations,

At personal, social and intellectual stations!

If all countries of the world can do good,

How can countries with rich population, be subdued?

Let’s salute our dear motherland, on that green note upright,

Let’s preserve and propagate its greenery bright!

Broken Promise

We are in the last week of August and yet trying to fight with the present enemy, CORONA! Have we been successful? God Alone Knows! We have lost so many lives, so many still battling! Have we done something wrong? Why is God angry with us? I have penned my feelings about this, in a few lines, hope you will agree with me!

Hey Mother Earth, please pardon us!
We haven’t been thoughtful, We have been callous!
Unthinkingly and continuously,
we have grabbed your resources,
We have been selfish,
We have crossed our limits and our senses!

Your green pastures are drunk with chemicals,
Who else, but we, can be blamed for the scruples?
Our bodies are being overloaded with medications,
How can we blame the microbes for the super infections?

SARS, MERS, CORONA are our own doings,
Our aspirations to conquer other human beings!

We know no limits for our greedy endeavors,
We hardly care for you, our environment or the green pastures!
We think of only conquering and only about this moment,
Let others go to hell, who cares?

Our want of things, materials, riches, you bet,
Has crossed all lines of wild despairs!
Your serene water bodies are battered with litter,
Even an iota of conscience would have proved better!

We have even manipulated the genes,
Thinking of producing Gods umpteen!
How imprudent could we be,
Does one behave such, even with an enemy?

It was a promise, to live here a safe and peaceful life indeed,
But a broken promise is the sole thing we have achieved!

KRISHNA KRISHNA!!!

Once again, we are in the first week of August 2020 and fearing heavy floods! Our goddess Krishna river, flows very close by and is a life giving, huge natural water body resource, known to never dry up! Though, we, once again fear facing heavy floods and are apprehensive about what will be the extent of damage this year? I have penned a few lines about her, she being the reason behind the GREEN  prosperity in this region and highly worshiped in the  golden belt of Western Maharashtra! I am sure, many of you will identify with me! Even now, its not too late, lets stop playing with nature!

She dances through the city, happily and merrily,
Taking twists and turns, feeding her bank gulley,
Usually she is calm and in a happy mood,
Playfully irrigating as many fields as she could!
She is the mother of one and all,
Bringing fertility, stability, prosperity for big and small,
Her waters are clean, serene, calm and quiet,
She comes from the mountains, thirty three rivers in her, unite!
But slowly the human babies whom she nurtured,
Have started throttling her veins, wherever they captured,
Unnaturally, unhygienically, unwittingly, they have blocked her playful streams,
Built houses, homes, hospitals and grounds, choking her, up to the brink!
In the want of riches, luxuries and accessories,
Plastics, bottles, non-degradable have been dumped, inhumanly in her tributaries!
She doesn’t know where to turn, how to reconcile?
Her waters are miserable, her mind in turmoil!
She is fed by rains and mountain waters,
Which sometimes go beyond her quarters!
Confused she flows wherever she can,
Taking all under her wings, rich, poor and clan!
Blessed as she is, she blesses others too,
Bringing in greenery, as she flows through!
But how long would she do that, how long can she bear?
When everything goes beyond measure, she has nothing but to despair!
She then runs wild, she gets bloated unlimitedly,
She has no choice, she tries to shrink repeatedly!
Her wrath knows no one, when she herself frays here and there,
Finding her way through, in and out of gullies, and nothing to spare!
If she is angry, who is to blame, if nature is upturned and situation aflame?
Let’s think of this, one and all, let’s be wiser, Big or small!
Let’s care for nature, let’s not be uncaring,
If nature retaliates, it will only be our doing!
We remember God, when the situation is odd,
We start believing in Divine Force,
Only when there is no hope or recourse!!!

TSUNAMI!!!

Today, on the context of the just departed "Nisarga" cyclone, I can't help but remember the one day in my life, which was sooo unique and nightmarish, like a bad dream!

I put down here, before you, my nightmare on a day, when I witnessed a natural calamity, one of its type, probably and hopefully the only one in my lifetime, for your quiet introspection! I was lucky to have escaped it, unscathed, happy to be alive and overjoyed to be able to come back home! Many were not so lucky! It was in 2004, 16 years back, but still the memories are very vivid and clear!

As I think retrospectively, once again, I am appalled at the way we have played with nature, manipulated it and taken it for granted! Now, it is manipulating us! And you cant blame it at all! Sharing my experience, hoping that you will realize the gravity!

It was a star- spangled night in December 2004! After a fortnight of vigorous planning, we were on our way to Kanya Kumari, the southernmost tip of India! We were about to join a parasailing camp, organized by a private sea-sports group, a few kilometers away from Kanya Kumari. It was a dream, about to come true! Excited about the adventures in store for us, we boarded the train, which shot through the dark, cold night, cutting into the darkness, crossing all the dark tunnels. With the rhythmic movement of the train, we all succumbed to the tranquility of deep sleep.
After a day in the train, the smell of the sea, the clear skies, the crisp, cold wind, indicated our ensuing joy! We were nearing our destination, the holy Kanya Kumari! The scenes passing by reminded me of all the beautiful landscapes, in oil and paint, which I had only seen on canvas, till today! We were silent, each one of us absorbing the environment, the beauty and the tranquility around us! Where else could heaven be? Spontaneously, we bowed to Mother Nature, our salutations splurging right from the bottom of our hearts! We had arrived at our destination. Before joining the camp, we had one whole day at our disposal. With elated spirits, very silently, we were off to the world famous spot, stories of Swami Vivekananda, the meditation centre, the temple, revolving in our minds!
We started off to the sea shore, close to our residential place and flopped down on the sparkling white sands. The endless sea lay in front of us. The waves came softly towards us. Moon light bathed the sea. The sea seemed meditative and tranquil! It was purely magic! Words eluded us. We were drinking in, the magic of the moment! The memories are still etched in my mind!
We had decided to run into the sea water but it looked so sacred that none of us felt like disturbing the tranquillity surrounding us!
The next day, the temples, the museum in the city, were a feast to our eyes and cameras. The time had now come to visit the famous temple. We had to sail in small boats to reach the temple, some miles off the sea shore. It was a clear sky and we set off singing merrily. Mesmerized by the surroundings, we reached our destination. The meditation centre was the pinnacle. After about two hours, we were standing at the southernmost tip of the Indian continent. We could see the inter mingling of the waters, colored differently. I had heard a lot about this place. Three oceans embraced each other at this point, a sight beyond imagination. I was capturing all the images in my mind and my handicam. I decided, after reaching the shores of Kanya Kumari, I would capture the temple from different angles. Getting inside a small boat, we started our journey back. The winds had changed direction. We could feel a slight change in the weather too! We reached the shore and I trotted off to capture the pictures of the temple from different angles, for the dear ones, at home.
I was walking towards the sea and to my horror; I could see a very, very, very big wave, over the statue of Swami Vivekanand. It had engulfed the statue and washed over it. I thought, it was a visual trick, this couldn’t be true! I had just left the site! With total concentration, I watched in awe! The huge wave was followed by another wave and another and another! This was not normal! The natives started gathering. Slowly, all turned into chaos. My friends were calling me back, our sacks drenched in the waves. I couldn’t believe, all was so peaceful here, some minutes back! The waves were all around us. We ran back, carrying whatever we could, with us! Our bags were wet and heavy. We went to the terrace of our residential hotel and what we saw was beyond imagination! Huge waves were all around the shore. They were rapidly encroaching the land! Small houses, visible some time back, had disappeared beneath the devilish waves! Water had reached the lower levels of the city. Not knowing what to do, we just locked ourselves in the hotel room, hoping everything would come back to normalcy! When we woke up the next day, there was worst possible devastation around us. We were lost, without lights, electricity, milk, tap water and newspapers! It was the morning of 27th December, 2004! We didn't know, what truly guided us, but through all chaos around us, not paying attention to our tummies crying out for food, we walked heavily towards the railway station and caught the first train back, which would take us to our “home, sweet home”! We had forgotten why we had come to Kanya Kumari. We wanted to get away, as fast as possible! Loads of people surrounded us, boarding and alighting. They belonged to all ages, castes, creeds and colors! They had lost their homes; some had lost their near and dear ones, some had lost all their belongings while some had lost everything. But they had saved their own lives and they had hope in their eyes! We watched helplessly. Their problems were huge and beyond repair.
After a few stations, we got to see the newspapers and reality stuck! WE WERE THE FIRST HAND WITNESSES OF THE TSUNAMI WAVES! We had seen them coming, we had captured them in memories and cameras. Tsunami waves had engulfed a large portion of mankind. The stories were all over the news papers. My skin tingled with goose flesh. I couldn’t and wouldn’t believe that we were there, when the calamity struck! We couldn’t imagine that we had had such a close encounter with NATURE”S WRATH and we had escaped by God’s grace. We couldn’t attend the camp but I had witnessed the most stunning event, in the history of mankind! The memories are my most prized treasures! We were back home, safe and sound!
It is truly said, “If you are alive, you can capture a hundred forts!”

I am glad to be alive today, although I mourn all those innocent lives, lost in the Tsunami waves. Somewhere deep in my heart, I can’t help but think if, we humans are responsible for such calamities. If these could really be called natural or are they man made?? It’s high time we introspect!!!
